Our guide to laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure used to reduce or eliminate unwanted body or facial hair. It is a medical procedure that uses concentrated beams of light (laser) to target and destroy the hair follicles, which are responsible for hair growth. Here’s how the process typically works at Refine Image Ottawa (RIO):

Consultation:

Before undergoing laser hair removal, it’s essential to have a consultation with our team. During this consultation, they will assess your skin type, hair color, and the area you want to treat to determine the most suitable laser and treatment plan for you.

Preparation:

You may be instructed to avoid sun exposure and certain skin care products before the procedure. Shave the treatment area a day or two before your appointment to ensure the laser energy is absorbed by the hair follicles and not the hair above the skin’s surface.

Procedure:

During the actual procedure, you’ll wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser. The technician will use a handheld laser device to target the hair follicles. The laser emits intense pulses of light, which are absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles. This absorption generates heat, which damages the follicles and inhibits future hair growth. Multiple sessions are usually required, as hair grows in different stages, and the laser is most effective during the growth phase.

Sensation:

Most people describe the sensation during laser hair removal as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin. While it can be uncomfortable, it’s generally well-tolerated. Some clinics offer numbing creams or cooling devices to make the procedure more comfortable.

Recovery:

After the procedure, you may experience some redness and mild swelling in the treated area, which usually subsides within a few hours to a day. You can typically return to your regular activities immediately after the treatment, but you should avoid sun exposure and follow any post-care instructions provided by your technician.

Maintenance:

Laser hair removal is not permanent, but it can significantly reduce hair growth. You’ll likely need multiple sessions over several months to achieve the desired results. After the initial treatments, periodic maintenance sessions may be necessary to keep the hair from regrowing.
