IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and it is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment used to address various skin concerns and improve skin’s appearance. IPL is sometimes referred to as a “photofacial” or “photorejuvenation.” Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL devices emit a broad spectrum of light wavelengths. This allows IPL to target a range of skin issues simultaneously, including:
Hyperpigmentation: IPL can effectively reduce the appearance of sunspots, age spots, freckles, and other pigmented lesions.
Redness and Rosacea: IPL can help reduce redness and visible blood vessels associated with rosacea and other skin conditions.
Acne: IPL can target the bacteria responsible for acne and reduce inflammation, helping to improve mild to moderate acne.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles: IPL can stimulate collagen production, which can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Here’s how an IPL treatment typically works:
Consultation:
You’ll have a consultation with a RIO practitioner to discuss your skin concerns and determine if IPL is an appropriate treatment for you. We generally only treat patients Fitzpatrick 1-3 at RIO with IPL (sometimes the odd fitz 4). We also try to avoid using this laser in the summer months.
Preparation:
Before the treatment, you may need to avoid sun exposure and certain skincare products. Shaving the treatment area is often recommended.
Procedure:
During the IPL procedure, a handheld device is used to deliver short pulses of intense, broad-spectrum light to the skin. The light is absorbed by the targeted pigments or blood vessels, which are then damaged or destroyed. The treatment is typically well-tolerated and can feel like a mild snapping or stinging sensation.
Recovery:
After the treatment, you may experience some redness and mild swelling, which usually subsides within a day or two. Your skin may also darken temporarily before gradually improving. You can usually return to your regular activities immediately following the procedure. Sometimes your sun spots (brown spots) will get darker like coffee grinds on the skin resulting in a 7-21 day period before they sloth off the skin.
Results:
IPL treatments are often done in a series, with several sessions spaced a few weeks apart to achieve the best results. Over time, you should notice improvements in the appearance of your skin, including reduced pigmentation, redness, and improved skin texture.
IPL is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner. However, there are some potential risks and side effects, including burns, blistering, and changes in pigmentation. It’s essential to follow post-care instructions and protect your skin from sun exposure after treatment to minimize these risks. If you’re interested in IPL treatment, consult with the team at RIO who can assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific needs.
